The initiative aims to empower female university students by creating a safe and intellectually stimulating space where young women can engage with African literature, reflect on social issues, and build supportive networks.

Participants are reading and discussing 12 books written by female African authors, exploring themes such as identity, gender equality, leadership, and resilience.

Through literature and structured dialogue, the project fosters critical thinking, confidence, emotional wellbeing, and community building among participants.

The project also addresses the often overlooked connection between mental wellbeing and intellectual engagement, providing a space where women feel seen, heard, and supported.

While Makeni hosts several higher education institutions, opportunities for structured intellectual engagement and peer support spaces for young women remain limited.

Many female students face pressures related to academic performance, social expectations, financial constraints, and personal development. These pressures can affect mental wellbeing and reduce opportunities for reflective dialogue and personal growth.

Additionally, exposure to African literature written by women remains limited despite its potential to inspire young readers and strengthen cultural identity.

Without safe spaces to discuss ideas, share experiences, and build supportive networks, many young women navigate these challenges in isolation.

UMPIWE Women’s Book Club seeks to address this gap by providing a structured, inclusive, and supportive environment where young women can connect through literature and dialogue.
